Again overcoming Jelena Jankovic’s injury, Serbia has defeated Argentina to advance to the Hyundai Hopman Cup final to face the United States on Friday night.

Jankovic won the first set against Gisela Dulko before retiring due to her upper leg strain. With France doing well against Chinese Taipei and ready to enter the final given an opening, Serbia couldn’t afford a slip-up.

Novak Djokovic defeated Juan Ignacio Chela 6-2, 6-3 and then the No. 1 seeds beat Argentina in three sets in the mixed doubles to ensure a place against Serena Williams and Mardy Fish.

Jankovic attempted to play through her leg injury and won a long and tight first set over Dulko 12 points to 10 in the tie-break. She soon went down a break in the second set and retired.

Games went on serve all the way to the tie-break in the opening set, where Dulko soon assumed control.

The Argentine had four set points in the tie-break, but blew them and Jankovic only needed two to take the set, which could have proved crucial in final calculations.

Djokovic needed to win his singles to keep Serbia’s final hopes alive, and had little trouble as he beat Chela in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3.

The doubles were still crucial to decide whether it would be Serbia or France in the final, so Jankovic tried to return for the doubles and let Djokovic take control at their end of the court.

Jankovic and Djokovic blitzed Dulko and Chela in the opening set 6-1, following the Argentines losing both its doubles matches previously in the tournament.

Dulko and Chela finally began playing better by taking advantaged of their wounded opponent to claim the second set 6-3 and force a match tie-break.

It was a match tie-break that would not only decide the winner of the tie, but whether or not Serbia or France would face the USA in the final.

Ending their disappointing Hyundai Hopman Cup winless, Argentina blew the match tie-break for themselves and France, with Serbia prevailing 10 points to four to see the two world No. 3s take their country to their first final in Perth.

Serbia finish on top of Group A with wins over France, Chinese Taipei and Argentina. Argentina lost all three ties to finish fourth in the group.

Chinese Taipei’s Su-Wei Hsieh and Yen-Hsun Lu came into Wednesday night’s session against Argentina with a combined singles ranking of 267 compared to Gisela Dulko and Juan Ignacio Chela’s 57, but the Asian Hopman Cup winners scored a remarkable upset.

In a marathon women’s match, Hsieh beat Dulko 3-6, 7-6, 7-5 in 146 minutes, which gave the Chinese Taipei team their first ever Hyundai Hopman Cup match victory.

It was not the last of the evening, though.

Lu proved to be too good for Chela, despite being ranked 110 compared to the Argentine’s 20. Chela could not manage a single break point against Lu, who wrapped up the match, and the tie, 6-3, 6-4.

In the mixed doubles, Chinese Taipei again prevailed after a match tie-break to secure the whitewash.

Leading into the tie, much of the talk surrounded Argentina having a comfortable win to set up a battle with Serbia on Thursday night to decide the Group A finalist, but it was Chinese Taipei that kept their hopes alive.

They do need Argentina to find form, or Serbia’s Jelena Jankovic to struggle to overcome injury, to be a chance while facing a tough night battle with France themselves, though.

For Argentina, their final hopes are over with the loss to Chinese Taipei after their Hyundai Hopman Cup begun with a 2-1 loss to fourth seeds France.

After a disappointing opening match loss to Tatiana Golovin, Dulko looked terrific early in her match against Hsieh. She raced through the first set 6-3 and looked well on the way to a comfortable victory, before she lost confidence and Hsieh’s grew with each game.

The Argentine raced to a 3-0 lead in both sets, despite the Chinese Taipei world No. 157 giving it her best attempt in what was one of the biggest hitting women’s matches of the tournament.

Dulko led 3-0, 4-1 and at 5-3 served for the match in the second set, but then Hsieh got going. Hsieh won four straight games to send the match into the third set, which she controlled for the most part.

Things were locked together at 5-5 with a tie-break looming, but Hsieh was able to win the final two games to pull off the miraculous comeback victory.

Lu seemed to feed off the energy Hsieh created to comfortably defeat Chela in straight sets, showing a very competent all round game.

Argentina started strong in the doubles winning the opening set 6-3, but then dropped the second before Lu and Hsieh dominated the match tie-break winning 10 points to four.
