French Open: First Round Begins in Paris

Virginie Razzano eyes the ball from Czech player Klara Zakopalova serves to during the first round of the French Tennis Open, at Roland Garros, in Paris, on May 25, 2008. Zakopalova won 6-4, 3-6, 2-6.
French Open: First Round Begins in Paris

The Sunday start at Roland Garros provided some drama but for the most part the favorites had a successful day, as first round action began on the terre battue of the second Grand Slam event of the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour season.

Two of the seven seeds in action weren't still standing at the end of the day, most notably No.15 seed Nicole Vaidisova, who continued her recent slump with a 76(2) 61 defeat to qualifier and good friend Iveta Benesova. Benesova had a solid performance but the loss may have been more a function of inconsistency on Vaidisova's side, as the former Top 10 star sprayed 38 errors to just nine winners to extend her Sony Ericsson WTA Tour losing streak to six matches. It was Benesova's fourth career Top 20 win, following previous victories against Silvia Farina, Vera Zvonareva and Mary Pierce. Virginie Razzano was the other seed to fall; the No.24 seed lost to Klara Zakopalova, 46 63 62.

"Iveta played a really good match," Vaidisova said. "It's always hard to play your best friend. She started the tie-break well, and I just have to give her credit. I looked to my box for support. I always do that and I did it today."

"The key point of the first set was the tie-break; I started well and it just went from there," Benesova declared. "I knew I had to attack. I was going for the big shots, and it was working. After a difficult first game in the second set I played well again, and I don't think she was as focused in that set."

Second seed Ana Ivanovic and fifth seed Serena Williams, who are projected to meet in the quarterfinals, both began their 2008 Roland Garros campaigns with straight set wins. Ivanovic held on in the second set to beat Sofia Arvidsson, 62 75, in the first match of the day.

"I'm very happy with the victory; it was very nice to come back here to Paris and go out there and play again," Ivanovic stated. "She gave me a tough match, especially in the second set. I let my intensity go down and she used it, and she started playing much better. But toward the end I'm happy I found my game and managed to break her back, and win the second set."

Williams crushed countrywoman Ashley Harkleroad later on in the day, 62 61.

"I'm definitely happy with the result today; I could have played better but I just want to work my way into the tournament," Williams said. "I have lots of matches under my belt from the clay court season. It is better than coming in with just one or two matches, especially on the clay."

No.19-seeded French hope Alizé Cornet beat Julia Vakulenko, 75 64, No.28 seed Dominika Cibulkova dismissed Angelique Kerber, 62 62, and No.30 seed Caroline Wozniacki crushed Yvonne Meusburger, 60 62.

Winners of matches between unseeded players were Lucie Safarova, Ekaterina Makarova, Nathalie Dechy, Milagros Sequera, Galina Voskoboeva, qualifiers Selima Sfar and Anastasiya Yakimova and wildcard Mathilde Johansson. The match between Gisela Dulko and Sara Errani was suspended due to darkness, with Italy's Errani leading, 46 64 31.

Gisela Dulko loses to Cibulkova in Rome

Gisela Dulko

Gisela Dulko loses to Cibulkova in Rome

It was a rainy day in Rome on Tuesday, and as such only four matches were completed, with over 15 matches being suspended or postponed to Wednesday's schedule. Among the players who made it through their first round matches were teenaged stars Victoria Azarenka and Dominika Cibulkova.

Cibulkova, who recently cracked the Top 30, beat former Top 30 player Gisela Dulko in much tighter fashion, 76(1) 64. Dulko, who recently won her third career Sony Ericsson WTA Tour singles title at the Tier IV event in Fès, Morocco, was up 5-3 in the first set before the Slovak youngster rallied her way back into it, cruising through the tie-break then hanging on for a competitive second set win. She is now 2-0 lifetime against the Argentine No.1, having beaten her at Prague just over a year ago.

One day after breaking into the Top 20 for the first time in her career, Azarenka got the better of a player that only recently dropped out of the Top 20, beating Sybille Bammer comprehensively, 61 63. World No.19 Azarenka used her deep, penetrating groundstrokes to overpower No.26-ranked Bammer, even fending off a 3-0 second set deficit with six straight games of her own to clinch the victory in an hour and 23 minutes. Azarenka is a wildcard at the Internazionali BNL d'Italia; Bammer was the No.19 seed.

Rounding out Tuesday's winners were Tsvetana Pironkova and Roberta Vinci. Pironkova beat fellow qualifier Klara Zakopalova, 64 62; wildcard Vinci was a 64 46 60 winner over another qualifier, Kaia Kanepi.

The last six first round matches plus all 16 second round matches - including those of the tournament's four highest seeds, Ana Ivanovic, Maria Sharapova, Svetlana Kuznetsova and Jelena Jankovic, are on the Wednesday schedule.

Jelena Jankovic
Berlin, Qatar Telecom German Open Wednesday Results and 5/8 order of Play

Ten seeded players were in action for the second round of the Qatar Telecom German Open. Eight of the ten made it through the next round.

Justine Henin, top seed, runned over Chan Yung-Jan losing only 2 games in the match.
Ana Ivanovic had a hard first set against lucky loser Akgul Amanmuradova winning the set in tie break but then it was all Ivanovic in the second were she claimed the victory.
Svetlana Kuznetsova, Jelena Jankovic and Agnes Szavay were other seeds that advanced.

Anna Chakvetadze, 6th seed, can not find her way into winning and lost against Victoria Azarenka... I wonder what it's wrong with her... a while ago I read that she said that after the robbery she suffered in Russia she was not the same but I'm not sure if that has to do anything with her tennis.
The other seed that lost today is Nadie Petrova who failed to Kirilenko.

Gisela Dulko, Second Seed, Advances; Quarterfinal Line-Up Set

Gisela Dulko followed top seed Anabel Medina Garrigues into the quarterfinals of the Grand Prix de SAR La Princesse Lalla Meryem with a straight set win over one of her nemeses on Thursday afternoon.

Dulko, the No.2 seed at the Tier IV stop, overcame crafty Frenchwoman Emilie Loit for the first time in three career encounters in somewhat of a rout, requiring just 67 minutes to prevail, 63 62. In the pair's two previous meetings Loit went in as the underdog and won both times, in straight sets at Acapulco in 2006 and in three at the same stop in 2007. But the rankings held true to form this time as the 62nd-ranked Argentine broke the world No.102 four times en route to victory.

Also moving through to the quarterfinals Thursday afternoon were No.6 seed Alisa Kleybanova, who downed qualifier Arina Rodionova, 67(3) 63 64, and No.7 seed Sorana Cirstea, who bounced junior phenom Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, also a qualifier, 64 62. In the last match of the day, No.4 seed Aravane Rezai took out Rossana de los Ríos, 76(2) 60.

The first four quarterfinalists were determined Wednesday. Top-seeded Medina Garrigues had the toughest match, warranting off a match point to beat Sesil Karatantcheva in a nail-biter, 36 76(4) 61. Olga Savchuk, Petra Cetkovska and Greta Arn also secured berths in the round of eight.

The last doubles quarterfinal took the court on Thursday with Johanna Larsson and Rodionova taking out Catalina Castaño and Anne Kremer, 75 76(3). The first three doubles quarterfinals all took place Wednesday.
